Blue Ridge Mountains
The Blue Ridge Mountains offer some of the most beautiful views you can imagine in the South.  Greenville, which is located in the foothills of the Blue Ridge is only about 40 minutes from some of those spectacular views.  You have a couple of ways you can go to get there.  Either go up Hwy. 25 to Hwy. 26 then to Asheville or take Hwy 276.  Want a tip?  Take 276 through Travelers Rest then on up those hair pin turns to Cesar's Head!  The drive is absolutely beautiful and when you arrive at Cesar's Head you can stop and get one of the most beautiful views available.  From that vantage point you can see Greenville, Table Rock and just some gorgeous landscape!

The Blue Ridge Mountains are a region and a part of the Appalachian Mountains.  They run from Georgia to Pennsylvania.  The southern part is called The Great Smokey Mountains.  So where does it get these names from?  Let me demonstrate where Blue and Smokey comes from.  See picture below.  I took this early one morning on the Blue Ridge Parkway just as the sun was coming up.

Kinda blue isn't it?  From a distance they also appears Smokey. The Blue Ridge Mountains has the Blue Ridge Parkway that runs along the Appalachian Trail ridge.  It will take you about 470 miles from start to finish.  After my morning shoot I stopped at the Pisgah Inn.  Great place for breakfast and what a view.  Below is a shot just before sitting down for some eggs and country ham... :-)

I spotted about 4 people with Nikons just ready to go!  There are really so many places to see and go while heading up from Greenville SC to Asheville via the Blue Ridge Parkway.  So again, I recommend you take 276 through Travelers Rest then up towards Cesar's Head.  Stop there and see the views, then continue on towards Brevard.  I love Brevard, quaint little town.  I walked in my first OP Taylors there.  Yep the same one that is now in Greenville!  Once you are done in Brevard, continue up through the Great Pisgah Forest.  Folks, this is a beautiful drive.  In the summer take the kids and stop at Sliding Rock!  Or  make a stop at the Cradle of Forestry.  Below is a shot of one of the cabins there!  You will learn a lot about Forestry in The Great Smokies!

From there keep heading up and soon you will be on the Blue Ridge Parkway.  I prefer to drive North towards Asheville.  I just think the drive is a little prettier.  You will soon reach the Pisgah Inn.  They are open from Spring to end of October.  Along the Blue Ridge Parkway there are numerous places to view and to hike.  You will be able to pull your car over and parking is provided.  There are 3 cool tunnels you will drive through that the kids will love!  Along the way you will see beautiful trees growing out of the rock!

Blue Ridge Foliage

Keep heading up the Blue Ridge Parkway till you see the Asheville NC exit.  Two places I highly recommend are the Biltmore House and The Grove Park Inn.  It's hard for me to describe the Biltmore Estate to you.  I believe it was the largest private residence in the US, maybe the world.  250 rooms, a winery, stables and incredible landscaping, flowers and views!  My wife and I like to go to the Summer Concert Series where you can see the likes of Bruce Hornsby, Tony Bennett and The Reverend Al Green.  One of my favorite things to do at Christmas is to drive over to the Grove Park Inn, sit in front of the great fireplace and sip warm cider....Take a trip up if you can and remember it's only about 55 miles from beautiful Downtown Greenville South Carolina!!
